We had a nice little getaway for a few days to Colorado. It was fun to relax and walk around some. On this trip we saw some things that none of us had ever seen before, which made it quite exciting.
There is still lots of snow on top of the mountains. As it is getting warmer it is causing the streams to be extremely full and the water to be rushing past. This is Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Jonathan and I have been up there plenty of times, and thought it would be a good place to go because it is a flat and easy hike around the lake. We were quite surprised when we walked up to the trailhead to see 3 feet of snow packed over all the trails and then on the lake. Part of the trail did clear off, but most of it was covered with deep snow.
James wanted to shovel the snow off the mountain with his backhoe.
On our drive to the Alluvial Fan and then Bear Lake we saw Big Horn Sheep. None of us had ever seen them before so it was quite exciting. They were quite large, and had large elk around too. We heard that it is very unusual for the elk and sheep to mingle.
The last thing we saw was a black bear 50 yards from our cabin in Allenspark (near Estes). Jonathan is always looking for a bear, and this year he saw one. He just happened to be sitting in the right chair at the right time to see it go by the mountain and up the hill. He jumped out of his chair very quickly to grab James to show him, and we all ran to the windows. It was a BIG bear. I'm very glad that we were inside when it walked by, especially James. It just made us wonder how often that can happen, because it came so quietly, yet moved slow and quickly up the mountain. It was a good trip, and I will post some more pictures soon of some other things that we did!
